overlanding adventure travel

We hope you like our new look and find the update worth while. We are still tweaking the site so bear with us. However enough about us, it seems we have a few topics which are causing concern both to travellers and the industry.
Fuel Surcharges are now being rolled out by overlanding companies and as the price of oil continues upwards we should expect higher charges. The other issue is how overlanding companies operate, and how third parties become involved.

Tucan warns on Counterfeit Bank Notes in South America

False US$100 notes of the series CB B2 notes are still circulating and from time to time causing problems for travellers. Tucan report “If you have US$100 notes, you are advised to check them carefully. In the top left-hand corner and bottom right-hand corner of the side with the President’s face there are matching serial numbers. This serial number starts with CB and then directly under that you’ll see B2. At the bottom of the note near the signature of the Treasurer of the US it says which series of notes it is. If you are given these notes in the 2001 series, change them in your home country or wherever you found them, as they will not be accepted in South America”.

Overlanding New Zealand

If you want to travel around New Zealand overland try out these guys escape rentals although it was chilly during winter it was worth it we had a great time. They gave us by mistake the wrong snow chains so check first - but refunded us the money without any problems - the designs on the vans are very cool.

Overlanding between Europe & Africa

May become a lot faster as Spain’s feasibility study for an undersea tunnel to connect Spain and Morocco enters the final stages. If the project goes ahead the tunnel would be 40km long and would begin operation for 2025. The undersea tunnel would unite North Africa and Europe and would be part of a new Mediterranean transport hub for train passengers and goods. However as with the Eurotunnel between the UK and France there is likely to be many financial hurdles however for travellers it could prove an exciting fast link into Africa.

Dragoman Offers Sample Overland mini Adventure

Dragoman and Wanderlust have joined forces to offer a 3 day camping ’safari’ in one of the Drago trucks in East Anglia UK from the 29th to the 31st August. Primarily designed as a taster for an overland tour it seams in principle a good idea if you are unsure of what overlanding offers (bear in mind you wont be travelling many hours in the truck). On the saturday the camp will relocate to the Maverick Festival for an added bonus.

Although the price seems a little steep for what is essentially a camping weekend at £255, or £205 for Wanderlust subscribers, you will be able to reclaim this amount against any Dragoman trip booked before the end of the year so the carrot has been provided.

Overlanding with Africa Travel Co

Does any body has experiences traveling with Africa Travel Co http://www.africatravelco.com/index.php ?

I seem to remember it got mixed reviews in another travel forum but it’s been awhile since my last research.  Their large max group size of 30 is a big turnoff for me but I’m not ruling them out yet until I research and hear about them more……

Overlanding Trip Notes

One of the reasons you travel with an overland company is because you are paying for the companies experience travelling in your selected area. So unless you are on a exploratory trip or party bus some up to date information would be very much appreciated. Silly things like were to do laundry and the local internet cafe become important details if you are travelling for extended periods of time.
Whilst more important details like when to visit certain locations like famous markets to experience them if full swing!
But the standard of details by overlanding companies seem to vary greatly. Should companies be upfront and say we will get you there, then it is down to you - manage expectations? What have been your experience, should travellers expect this level of detail! We already know that overlanding crew are not tour guides.

Advice on Overland NZ

They do not seem to be the same as the many hop on hop buses which operate around New Zealand. But more traditional overlanding company, and by there own admission a relatively new company. If you have travelled with overlandnz we would love to hear your experiences.

Overlanding, Taking It Slow

I’m planning an overlanding trip, possibly up to 3 years nonstop, and I plan to do some photography.  I don’t expect any company or group of individuals to alter their trip to give me extra time.  I’m curious, what company (Dragoman?) has longer tours that spend more time in each location?

Overlanding with TopdeckTours

We have recently been made aware of Topdeck, who are kind of an overlanding company. If anyone has been on their trips please let us know your experience, or if you can shed more light on the company!

Thanks
