Machu Picchu Alert

Due to heavy rains over a period of several days, the Cusco area and surrounding regions have experienced flooding, mudslides and bridge outages that have severely affected transportation in several sectors.

Services/travel affected include the trains to Machu Picchu, which are not currently running due to damage to the rails, hikes to Machu Picchu are also suspended or not advised.

Transportation to Lima via Abancay has been suspended, and some areas of the Sacred Valley (the road to Pisaq) are also unpassable though alternate routes have been opened.

Flooding had been reported on the road out of Cusco at Urcos heading towards the Puno direction. However, we´re told that travel to and from Puno and Arequipa is still possible.

Within the city of Cusco, services are in normal operation (with exception of flights suspended or delayed during heavy rains). Mudslides have been experienced in some of the steeper, surrounding hills.

Please note that flooding is common during the rainy season and that this adverse weather will not affect trips planned for later in the year. Source

Overlanding - The Good Stuff

Some overlanding companies featured on the site get a bit of bashing but that is not to say that Overlanding cannot be a worthwhile and fantastic experience. So we thought we would kick off with some of the Good Stuff about Overlanding. On that note and remaining positive we will get the ball rolling with

Bush camping whilst overlanding - when done correctly it is truely amazing experience, whether that is on a deserted beach in South America or in the depths of the African plain there is always something to stimulate your senses.

Syrian Border

For all those overlanding across the middle east, when you exit Syria across a land border you will have to pay an exit tax of 550 SYP per person - has to be in SYP. Anyway else have useful tips!

GPS, mobiles, laptops why not?

A common question posed to overlanding crew. Yet any logical answer has still to be found. It is surprising how many trucks work without them. Considering it should be standard equipment to have on board in this day and age.

So why do companies fail to use them ? are they stuck in the past ? Do they not believe in technology? or is it to maintain overlanding as a “true experience”? or my favourite to reduce costs.

We posed this question some time ago and were wondering if things have changed considering digital cameras and the use of laptops, so what do you think ?
