From this years Hurricanes, with Haiti and Cuba badly damaged over the past few days. Hurricane Ike is due to sweep through the area and cause more devastation.

State of Emergency in Bangkok

Travellers have been urged not to travel to Thailand after prime minister Samak Sundaravej declared a state of emergency in Bangkok amid pro- and anti-government protests that have left at least one person dead. The rest of the country is reported to be quiet, we have had no reports of this affecting any overlanding tour.

Dam Waters spill into the Grand Canyon

After days of high rains water from the Redlands Dam spilled into a side canyon which contained the Supai village causing extensive flooding. Although the majority have been accounted for, the search remains in effect for a number of missing people.
Flash flood warnings remained in place with more rain forecast.

Turkey Mortar Attacks

Over the past week there have been several attacks around Istanbul. on the 27 July, there were two bomb attacks in a residential neighbourhoods on the European side of Istanbul which resulted in several deaths and injuries. Whilst today a mortar shell attack on a military building injured three people.
Generally speaking these are not areas which tourist frequent and we have had no reports of any overland tour being affected.

Increased Volcanic Activity at Tungurahua

The volcanic activity of Tungurahua, near Baños in Ecuador, has increased over the past week with ash plumes and the noises reported form explosions caused windows to vibrate in the affected area. Banos close by is very much on the overlanding routes in Ecuador, however we have no reports of this affecting tours.

Tucan Travel tours report that their tours have not been affected.

Dragoman & Overlanding

Well it looks like Dragoman is diversifying into other areas as it will soon provide non-truck based small group adventures to places such as Thailand, Vietnam and Costa Rica. Scheduled for their new brochure out in September which will also include shorter Adventure trips between 2-3 weeks.

Longer Tours in Africa

I really need some help now. I have been going round and round all the different companies finding the perfect trip and then finding a problem with it.

I would like to do a long trip in Africa, like the ‘African Contrasts’ with Kumuka or ‘Africa All The Way’ with African Trails, but I keep finding very mixed opinions on the different companies.

Please tell me all about your experiences, good and bad. All advice will be greatly appreciated.

How Green is Overlanding

Companies try to limit the impact or footprint on where they travel however is the presence of overland Trucks in some countries detrimental to the local environment. The fuel, food and water required to keep the trucks going is also an issue particular in areas where these items are in sort supply. Should overlanding companies still be running trucks? And of course you have to get to the start destination usually a long haul flight!
