Overlanding in Colombia

Category: Dragoman, EoE, South America | Nov 26th, 2006 By Moderator

We have noticed that a number of companies now include Colombia into their itineraries in South America. It seems to be a very popular destination at the moment and was wondering if anyone had been through and would you recommend it. Which company did you use, what was there to see and do ? was it well organised and did you travel on the roads.

  1. I am interested in travelling colombia initally thinking about doing it with dragoman it is SVQ47 trip. Has anyone else done this trip.

  2. Dont know about Dragoman but Tucan do a similar trip, but fly from place to place in colombia. I dont think anyone travels by road.

  3. I dont think anyone travels by road across the country - the driving times would be huge due to the mountain range. Plus it not that safe in some areas.

I did a Colombia trip with Drago last year - and we did not actually overland within Colombia at all, we left the truck at the border entering Colombia and flew everywhere internally, then picked up the truck at the exit border. It was driven across by a couple of local guys - but at the time (Apr/May last year) Drago could not get insurance to have passengers on the truck anywhere in Colombia. I don’t know if that has changed, but I would be surprised if it had so check whether you will actually be overlanding.

We found the Colombian airline very helpful when we were organising flights etc so it might be worth just organising it yourself if it isn’t really an ‘overland’ trip as such.

  5. We have had reports of increased guerilla activity in the Quind?o region worth checking the local situation.

  6. Overlanding is no longer necessary in many countries as the road infra structure these days are much better. My recommendation is do not waste your time going on an overland trip where you can do a good public transport tour .I would not do an overland tour outside Africa.

  7. Colombia appears to we riding a wave of renewed hope as Betancourt is reunited with family after 6 years of capativity by the FARC. Colombia has had a resurgence of tourism following years of lawlessness, Bradt for example will soon launch a Colombia Travel Guide as they can see the tide is turning and there are now overlanding companies - actually overlanding across Colombia such as EoE.
