Overlanding Trip Notes
Category: Seek Advice | Jun 27th, 2008 By EditorOne of the reasons you travel with an overland company is because you are paying for the companies experience travelling in your selected area. So unless you are on a exploratory trip or party bus some up to date information would be very much appreciated. Silly things like were to do laundry and the local internet cafe become important details if you are travelling for extended periods of time.
Whilst more important details like when to visit certain locations like famous markets to experience them if full swing!
But the standard of details by overlanding companies seem to vary greatly. Should companies be upfront and say we will get you there, then it is down to you - manage expectations? What have been your experience, should travellers expect this level of detail! We already know that overlanding crew are not tour guides.

Generally I was disappointed with the level of information provided by Dragoman on my South America trip - I know the drivers are not tour guides and don’t expect a guided tour everywhere, but up to date city notes should be available given how often their drivers pass through each location. We were getting city notes that were several years out of date, and half the time ended up getting more useful information from passengers’ guidebooks or from people on other trucks who we passed along the road.
I don’t think this would have been fixed my their managing my expectations and forewarning me that their info would be way outdated - they really need to have it updated. Isn’t that what they are paid for….?
