Destination Show

Just a quick reminder that the Destination Holiday and Travel show will take place at Earls Court London and runs from the 5th to 8th of February. Well worth attending!

You can obtain a complimentary ticket for entry to the show with Tucan or Dragoman.

Tucan Currency Changes

Tucan Travel are the latest to adjust prices due to currency fluctuation. However there will be no increases for clients who have already booked. The Australian Dollar prices have been increased by 15% whilst the US Dollar prices have decreased by 10% from Thursday 18 December 2008. For more detailed information click here. This follows Intrepid who at the end of November had warned of currency surcharges.

Update:

Tucan Travel are advising passengers to book by the 31st of Jan 2009 to avoid a price hike. ” Due to current exchange rates, Tucan Travel may need to increase our Group Tour prices by 10% or more in most currencies including GBP, CAD, AUD and NZD. We will be reviewing and publishing these increases at the end of January 2009 “



Communication between Africa & Middle East limited

Overlanders may experience problems with Internet and phone communications between Europe, the Middle East, and Asia after submarine cables were severed around Malta and Egypt. The disrupted is likely to last until early next year until the underwater cables can be repaired.



Athens Ablaze

Rioting has intensified tonight with many areas throughout Athens and other Greek cities now in the grip of civil unrest. This is by far the worst rioting that has happened in the past 20 years in Greece, with the police unable to contain the situation. Many shops, banks even the xmas tree has been set ablaze in Syntagna and around central Athens. The rioting spiralled out of control after a youth in his teens was shot dead by police on Saturday. A national strike has been called for 10th Dec but events are unfolding by the minute and several large marches are or have taken place. Tourist are advised to stay off the streets.



Intrepid Currency Surcharge

It seems the fluctuating exchange rates are having an impact at Intrepid, as they may introduce a currency surcharge. On their website they are encouraging people to pay up! “Avoid any surcharge by paying in full by 30 November, 2008.”



Storms halt ferry crossing to Africa

Storms across southern Spain are causing flash floods, and the ferry link to Morocco - Tangier and Spain’s African enclave Ceuta were suspended. We currently have no reports this is affecting any overlanding trips.



Belgium Rail Strike

On Monday 6th Belgium railways will go on strike bring all rail travel in the country to a halt. Eurostar services between the UK and both Brussels and Lille on Monday (October 6) have been cancelled. The strike is set to last 24-hours and is scheduled to begin from 10pm on Sunday (October 5).

Turkey Mortar Attacks

Over the past week there have been several attacks around Istanbul. on the 27 July, there were two bomb attacks in a residential neighbourhoods on the European side of Istanbul which resulted in several deaths and injuries. Whilst today a mortar shell attack on a military building injured three people.
Generally speaking these are not areas which tourist frequent and we have had no reports of any overland tour being affected.
