Overlanding in the UAE

Entering the UAE will become more expensive for many travellers from the 1st August. The government has introduced 16 new categories of visas together with new processing fees.
A 30-day visa to visit the UAE will cost 500 dirham (US$136) and travellers who want to stay for an extended period must obtain a visa valid for 90 days which costs 1,000 dirham (US$272). However nationalities that currently are not required to apply for a visa will not have to pay under the new system. This applies mostly to visitors from Western Europe and North America. As always check your own personal visa requiements before travelling.



Ecuador Goes Visa-Free!

Well the latest change to Ecuador’s fluctuating Visas requirements. A statement from the Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry said they will allow foreigners to stay in the country up to 90 days. The move will benefit residents from 130 countries, who usually need a visa to enter Ecuador. This should take effect on June 20th, but as always check your personal Visa requirements as changes occur very quickly.



Planning on visiting North America

Travellers will be required to register online with US authorities at least three days 72 hours before leaving to visit America taking effect on the 12th January 2009.
The rules will apply to citizens from the 27 nations of the visa waiver scheme. This includes most of western Europe as well as Australia, Japan and New Zealand. Travellers will need to provide biographical data, flight number and destination address and the answers to a number of additional questions. Travellers who do not meet the necessary security requirements will be forced to obtain a US visa, which can take some time and money.
Successful applications will be valid for multiple entries over two years. You will be able to register in advance from August 2008 through travel agents, airline websites or a special US government website.



Tibet closed or opened?

Chinese media had reported that Tibet would reopen to foreign tourists from May 1 2008 though officials have not confirmed this and a U.S.-based rights group says Beijing does not plan to allow foreigners in until after this August’s Olympics. Already some overland companies such as Dragoman have re-directed relevant tours.



Rwanda Visas

The Rwanda Government has introduced what they are calling an Entry Facility. “The entry facility is a document issued by the Immigration Department that enables the citizens from countries which do not have a Rwandan Embassy to obtain a single entry temporary visa of 15 days at any official entry point upon arrival. The applicant will present this document to our Immigration Officer found at any entry point.

Applicants holding national passports from USA, Germany, Canada, Tanzania, Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, South Africa, Kenya, Great Britain, Sweden, Hong Kong and Burundi do not need an entry facility due to the bilateral agreement that Rwanda has with these countries. ”

To obtain: log onto www.migration.gov.rw and click on ?entry facility? fill in the form. The Rwandan immigration will respond in 2 days. The Rwandans email your Entry Facility to you, print it out take it with you to the border. This enables a visa to be issued at the point of entry.

Bolivia Visa Requirements

Bolivia will be requiring visas for US citizens starting December 1, 2007. Tourists travelling to Bolivia will have pay $134 for a 30-day tourist visa. The visa can be extended for up to 90 days but the cost is still unclear.

Tourists must produce proof of economic solvency when entering the country and provide a list of hotel reservations for the entire planned visit. Or they must be able to show a notarised invitation from a Bolivian citizen as well as a small passport photo taken against a red background.

US visitors will be able to obtain a visa either on the border or in the airport. The new requirements to enter Bolivia is a reciprocal fee as Bolivians entering the United States are charged $100 for each visa.

Of course this is subject to change so please check the status just before you depart.
